Macular scarring is a skin condition that many people have, but may not know it. A person's face can be covered with lighter and darker patches of pigmented skin due to acne - this makes up macular scars. Usually, there are no indents or other signs on the surface which would indicate an existing problem; however, some patients think these marks count as real scars because they affect their appearance so much

  • Boxcar scars are round or oval-shaped superficial scars with sharp vertical edges.
  • Rolling scars show as undulations on the skin's surface and are often created by skin sticking to the dermis' underlying components.
  • Deep divots are deep scars caused by a decrease of subcutaneous tissue volume, resulting in a big divot-like hole (similar to divot holes on a golf course).
  • Ice-pick scars are deep yet small holes in the skin, which are named from the indentation left by an ice-pick.
  • Acne causes hypertrophic scarring, which is elevated and frequently pigmented.
  • Keloid scars are elevated scars that are often reddish-purple in colour and are raised from the surrounding skin surface.

Acne scarring is classified as follows (Goodman & Barron):

Grade 1: Macular scar tissue, also known as flat scar tissue, is defined by flat patches of increased or decreased pigmentation that may be detected from a distance of more than 50cm.

Grade 2: Mild disease that can be concealed with make-up and is apparent at distances of less than 50cm. Mild rolling acne scars are an example.

Grade 3: Moderate disease that may be seen at a distance of 50cm or more and is difficult to conceal with make-up or the natural shadow of shaven beard hair. The scar can be flattened by stretching the skin. Significant rolling scars, shallow boxcar scars, and mild to severe hypertrophic scars are examples.

Grade 4: Scarring is not flattened by stretching the skin, as it is in Grade 3. Severe boxcar scars, deep divots, ice pick scars, and hypertrophic keloid scarring (extremely raised/pigmented scars) are all examples of hypertrophic keloid scarring.

Acne Scar Reduction

Until recently, there were just a few harsh treatments available for Acne Scar Reduction, including:

  • Chemical peels were used to remove the dead skin and reveal youthful, glowing skin.
  • Surface ablation of the skin (dermabrasion and microdermabrasion), sometimes known as resurfacing because it causes the skin surface to renew, was performed by a variety of methods, including older types of laser devices known as "Ablative" laser treatment.

While laser treatment is not currently recommended for most types and grades of acne, it is suitable and effective for Grade 1 macular acne scarring. One of the most common types of acne scarring is grade 1 macular scarring.

Scarring from Macular Grade 1 Acne can be treated with laser therapy.

Grade 1 Macular Scarring is primarily a problem of skin pigmentation, so it can be treated with the advanced laser technology at Derma Miracle Clinic. The Fractional Co2 Laser Treatment benefits those that have more pigment in previous acne scars and does not require any changes to your current texture or elasticity of your skin!
